Fit for Future

With a population of about 95 million people, Vietnam is an important regional market for both global technology providers and domestic companies. The "Fit for Future" programme launched together with Plan International helps to find and train local talent from marginalised backgrounds - youth from remote rural areas, from the poorest families, from ethnic minorities, and youth with disabilities. It will specifically target young girls in Hanoi who face all kinds of barriers to education and access to work, train them in IT skills and help them get internships and jobs with local companies.

The challenge

Vietnam is an important regional market for both global technology providers as well as domestic companies. Nevertheless, Vietnamese companies lack workers with the necessary skills. Vietnam will need around 400,000 IT staff by 2020, and only half of the demand can be met by existing universities and training institutions.

In addition, while the IT sector in Vietnam is currently dominated by men, more than 50,000 young women move to Hanoi every year to find job opportunities in industrial zones on the outskirts of the city. Those jobs are usually manual, low-paid labour jobs with no long-term prospects for better skilled positions.

Solution

"Fit for Future" is a three-year programme launched in 2015 that helps to find and train local talent from marginalized backgrounds - youth from remote rural areas (migrant young men and women), from the poorest families, from ethnic minorities, and youth with disabilities.

It specifically targets young girls in Hanoi who face all kinds of barriers to education and access to work and provides them with a holistic programme, training them in IT skills, developing their soft skills and work readiness, and helping them get internships and jobs with local companies.
